Clear-to-Dark Lenses
Clear indoors. Darker in the sun. One pair that adjusts to the light.
Glasses That Adjust to the Light
Clear-to-dark lenses look like regular clear lenses indoors and darken automatically when you step outside. They react to the sun's UV light, so you don't have to switch between your glasses and a pair of sunglasses every time you go in and out.
They are a great everyday choice if you spend your day moving between indoors and outdoors: walking the dog, running errands, sitting on a patio or watching your kids play outside.
How Clear-to-Dark Lenses Work
Activated by UV: the lenses darken when they are exposed to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light.
Stronger UV, darker lenses: the brighter and sunnier it is, the darker they get. A bright summer afternoon makes them darker than a cloudy morning.
Back to clear indoors: when you go back inside, away from UV light, the lenses gradually return to clear.
Perfect for the Outdoors
Because they respond to the sun, clear-to-dark lenses are at their best outside: walks, hikes, gardening, shopping trips and outdoor sports. You get comfortable vision in bright light and clear lenses again as soon as you come inside.
Good to Know: Driving
Most car windshields block UV light. Since UV is what makes the lenses darken, clear-to-dark lenses usually will not turn dark inside a car.
If you spend a lot of time driving in bright sun, a pair of prescription sunglasses is the better choice behind the wheel.
On very bright days, clear-to-dark lenses are not as dark as a dedicated pair of sunglasses. For the beach, the slopes or a full day on the golf course, prescription sunglasses give you the most comfort.

Clear-to-Dark Lens Questions
What makes clear-to-dark lenses darken?
They react to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. The stronger the UV, the darker the lenses become.
Do clear-to-dark lenses work in the car?
Usually not. Most windshields block UV light, so the lenses stay mostly clear inside a car. For driving in bright sun, prescription sunglasses are the better choice.
Are they as dark as sunglasses?
Not quite. On very bright days they get noticeably darker, but a dedicated pair of sunglasses is darker still.
How quickly do they turn clear again?
When you go back indoors, away from UV light, the lenses gradually fade back to clear.
Should I get clear-to-dark lenses or prescription sunglasses?
Choose clear-to-dark if you want one pair for indoors and outdoors. Choose prescription sunglasses if you drive a lot or spend long hours in bright sun. Many customers get both with our Buy 1 Get 1 FREE offer.
